Is your organisation truly ready for AI?

Artificial intelligence is no longer a technology on the horizon. In many cases, those judgment calls are wrong, not through malice but through a simple lack of awareness. Confidential client information, strategic plans, financial data and personally identifiable information can all find their way into external AI platforms, often with no way to recover or restrict how that data is subsequently used.

From a regulatory standpoint, the implications are significant. Organisations operating under GDPR, FCA regulations or sector-specific compliance frameworks have obligations around data handling that do not pause simply because a useful new tool is available. A data breach caused by an employee’s well-intentioned use of an AI tool is still a data breach.

Invest in user awareness. The human element remains the most significant variable in any security posture. When people understand why the controls exist and what the risks look like in practice, they become allies rather than liabilities.

Finally, engage at board level. AI risk is no longer a technical conversation. It belongs in the boardroom alongside reputational, regulatory and operational risk. CISOs who can articulate the AI threat landscape in business terms will find it far easier to secure the investment and authority needed to address it properly.

The opportunity on the other side

It would be a disservice to frame this entirely as a risk story, because AI also represents a genuine and significant opportunity for IT and security teams themselves.

The same technology that creates new attack surfaces also enables faster threat detection, more intelligent anomaly identification and the ability to process and respond to security events at a scale that no human team could manage alone. AI-assisted security operations can reduce the burden on stretched teams, improve response times and help surface insights that would otherwise be buried in noise.

Organisations that approach AI readiness thoughtfully, building the right governance frameworks, controls and culture now, will be better positioned to take advantage of AI’s productivity benefits while managing its risks responsibly. Those that do not may find themselves playing catch-up in an environment that moves quickly and forgives slowly.
